Our Chairman

Mike Schmidtberger

Head of Private Funds and Regulatory

Mike Schmidtberger is the Chairman of Norm Law, Partner, and Head of Private Funds and Regulatory. Prior to joining Norm Law, Mike was Chair Emeritus of the Executive Committee at Sidley Austin LLP. He served on the Executive Committee from 2002-2025, chairing the committee starting in 2018. He also served on the firm’s Management Committee from 2008-2025. Mike’s tenure at the firm also included serving as the Managing Partner of the New York office from September 2011 through December 2017, and serving as a global co-leader of the Investment Funds practice.

Mike’s principal areas of practice are securities and futures-related funds and corporate transactions, including related regulatory matters. He advises and represents clients in domestic and international offerings of hedge funds, hybrid funds, fund of funds, public and private commodity pools, and structured derivative and principal-protected transactions.
Mike has been ranked by Chambers Global in Hedge Funds as a Band 1 lawyer from 2013–2018 and as an Eminent Practitioner from 2019–2025. He was recognized by Chambers USA as a Band 1 lawyer in the same category from 2010–2017 and as an Eminent Practitioner 2018–2025.

John Nay

Founder of Norm Ai and Norm Law

John Nay is the Founder and CEO of Norm Ai, the Regulatory AI company. He has more than a decade of research experience at the intersection of AI and law, most recently at Stanford, where he pioneered A Legal Informatics Approach to AI Alignment as a Fellow at CodeX. John was also the founding CEO of Brooklyn Investment Group, an AI-powered investment software platform with an SEC Registered Investment Adviser subsidiary, where he now serves as Chairman. As a Ph.D. student at Vanderbilt University, he conducted AI research funded by the U.S. National Science Foundation and the U.S. Office of Naval Research. After Vanderbilt, he was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at NYU and an Affiliate at Harvard. As an Adjunct Professor, he created the first AI course at the NYU School of Law. John has authored dozens of research articles on AI and AI policy, many of which have been published in leading technical journals and law reviews. His article “Artificial Intelligence and Interspecific Law” was recently published in Science.
