The Future of the Legal Practice

Mike Schmidtberger is the Chairman of Norm Law, Partner, and Head of Investment Funds and Regulatory. Prior to joining Norm Law, Mike was Chair of the Executive Committee at Sidley Austin LLP. He served on the Executive Committee from 2002–2025, chairing the committee starting in 2018. He also served on the firm's Management Committee from 2008–2025. Mike's tenure at the firm also included serving as the Managing Partner of the New York office from September 2011 through December 2017, and serving as a global co-leader of the Investment Funds practice.

Mike's principal areas of practice are securities and futures-related funds and corporate transactions, including related regulatory matters. He advises and represents clients in domestic and international offerings of hedge funds, hybrid funds, fund of funds, public and private commodity pools, and structured derivative and principal-protected transactions.

Mike has been ranked by Chambers Global in Hedge Funds as a Band 1 lawyer from 2013–2018 and as an Eminent Practitioner from 2019–2025. He was recognized by Chambers USA as a Band 1 lawyer in the same category from 2010–2017 and as an Eminent Practitioner 2018–2025.

John is widely recognized for his research on legal reasoning in large language models and brings more than a decade of experience in AI and law. He conducted National Science Foundation–funded research during his Ph.D. at Vanderbilt University and has held research and teaching roles at NYU, Harvard, and Stanford, including creating the first AI course at the NYU School of Law. His scholarship has appeared in leading technical journals and law reviews.

Prior to Norm Ai, John was the founding CEO of Brooklyn Artificial Intelligence, Inc., an AI-powered investment platform with an SEC-registered investment adviser subsidiary managing billions of dollars. Brooklyn AI was acquired by TIAA Nuveen, a global asset manager with $1.3 trillion in assets under management.
