Mike Schmidtberger is the Chairman of Norm Law, Partner, and Head of Private Funds and Regulatory. Prior to joining Norm Law, Mike practiced at Sidley Austin LLP in New York City for more than 35 years. He was Chair of Sidley’s Executive Committee from January 2018 through April 2025 when he stepped down as required by that firm’s partnership agreement. Mike served on Sidley’s Executive Committee from 2002 - April 2025 and also served on the firm’s Management Committee from 2008 - April 2025. Mike’s tenure at the firm also included serving as the Managing Partner of the New York office from September 2011 through December 2017, and serving as a global co-leader of the Private Funds practice.
Mike’s principal areas of practice are securities and futures-related funds and corporate transactions, including related regulatory matters. He advises and represents clients in domestic and international offerings of hedge funds, hybrid funds, fund of funds, public and private commodity pools, structured derivative and principal-protected transactions, and refund restructurings.
Mike has been ranked in numerous industry publications and directories, and in particular by Chambers Global in Nationwide Hedge Funds as a Band 1 lawyer from 2013 – 2018 and as an Eminent Practitioner from 2019 – 2025. He was similarly recognized by Chambers USA as a Band 1 lawyer and as an Eminent Practitioner. In March 2013, Mike received The John Jay Award, which is presented at an annual gala to members of the Columbia College family for distinguished professional achievement. In May 2018, Mike received the Alumni Medal at Columbia University’s commencement. In May 2023, Mike was honored as a “Hometown Hero” at the 30th Annual Gridiron Gala, an annual event hosted by the United Way of New York City (UWNYC), the New York Giants, and the New York Jets to celebrate their partnership to support the mission and goals of the UWNYC.
